What's on the test
- Permit and license rules: You can apply for a learner license at 15 if you finish the classroom part of driver education.
- Road signs: Shape tells you the sign before you read it: octagon is stop, equilateral triangle is yield, diamond is a hazard warning, pentagon is school, round is railroad, and a pennant warns of a no-pass zone.
- Signals and markings: Red means stop before the crosswalk.
- Right-of-way: Right-of-way is given, not taken.
- Turns and lanes: Plan every turn early.
- Speed and following: Texas limits when nothing else is posted: urban district 30 mph, alley 15 mph, numbered highway outside town 70 mph for cars, other highways 60 mph.
- Passing: Pass only when the way is clear.
- Parking and stopping: Never park, stop or stand on a crosswalk, sidewalk, bridge, railroad track or inside an intersection.
- Sharing the road: Trucks need more room to stop: a car at 55 mph stops in about 240 feet, a loaded truck in more than 400 feet.
- Alcohol and drugs: An adult age 21 or older is legally intoxicated at a BAC of 0.08 or more.
- Safe driving: Everyone in the car must wear a safety belt.
- Emergencies and weather: If you skid, take your foot off the gas, do not brake hard, and steer in the direction of the skid.
- Texas essentials: New residents have 90 days to get a Texas license and must register their vehicle within 30 days of moving or buying it.
