What's on the test
- Permit and license rules: You can apply for a Class C instructional permit at age 15.
- Road signs: Shape tells you the sign.
- Signals and markings: A red light means a complete stop before the crosswalk or intersection, then wait for green.
- Right of way: At an intersection with no signs or signals, if two vehicles arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.
- Turns and lanes: For a right turn, signal, approach in the right lane near the curb, yield to bicyclists going straight, and finish in the right lane of the new street.
- Speed limits: Unless posted otherwise: 30 mph in urban or residential areas, 35 mph on an unpaved county road, and 55 mph in all other areas.
- Passing: Pass on a two-lane road only in a passing zone, where the line nearest you is not solid.
- Parking and stopping: It is against the law to park on a highway.
- Sharing the road: Stop and stay stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, even when your light is green.
- Alcohol and drugs: At 21 or older you are under the influence at 0.08 blood alcohol.
- Safe driving: Georgia has a primary seat belt law: officers can stop you for it alone.
- Emergencies and weather: If you start to skid, ease your foot off the accelerator and turn the wheel in the direction of the skid.
- Georgia specials: New residents must get a Georgia license or permit within 30 days of becoming a resident.

Five things to remember
- On a permit, a licensed Class C driver at least 21 years old must sit beside you. The knowledge test costs $10.00, and you pay again for every attempt. (Georgia Driver's Manual, PDF p. 27)
- Vertical rectangles are generally regulatory signs. Horizontal rectangles are generally guide signs. Diamond signs warn of existing or possible hazards. (Georgia Driver's Manual, PDF p. 29)
- A flashing red light works like a stop sign: stop completely, then go with caution after yielding. A flashing yellow light means slow down and use caution. (Georgia Driver's Manual, PDF p. 35)
- Turning left, yield to all traffic from the opposite direction. Entering a road from an alley or private road, stop and yield to traffic and pedestrians. (Georgia Driver's Manual, PDF p. 18)
- For a left turn, signal, move to the far left lane or the turn lane, and keep your wheels straight until you turn. Yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. Do not change lanes in the intersection. (Georgia Driver's Manual, PDF p. 20)
